Evil in the form of a mysterious, unknown shaman enters a small community of nomadic Inuit and upsets its balance and spirit of cooperation. The stranger leaves behind a lingering curse of
bitterness and discord. Years later, the community's best hunters, Amajuat, the Strong One, and his brother, Atanarjuat, the Fast Runner, provoke jealousy and rage in the leader's ill-tempered
son, Oki. When Atanarjuat wins away Oki's promised wife-to-be, Oki vows to get even and hatches a plot to murder both brothers while they sleep. Amajuat is killed, but Atanarjuat escapes by
running for his life, naked, across the spring sea ice. Later, after a spiritual struggle to reclaim his path, Atanarjuat learns to face both his natural and supernatural enemies. This exciting
thriller, set in ancient Igloolik in Canada's eastern Arctic, is Canada's first feature film written and produced in an Aboriginal language.
