The 2008-2009 season has something for everyone.
We open the season with one of famous composer Giacomo Puccini’s most popular operas. La Bohθme is one of the 10 most produced operas in the world and has been a favorite since it was first produced in 1896 in Turin, Italy.
Our second production of the season is a delightful, yet dark, story based on the Brothers Grimm fairytale Hansel and Gretel. Composed by Engelbert Humperdinck in 1893, this is the first time in 10 years Tulsa Opera has produced Hansel and Gretel as a mainstage opera and only the sixth time in our 60 year history. You will not want to miss it.
The season closes on a lighter note with Donizetti’s L’Elisir d’Amore. A relatively older opera compared to our other two offerings of the season, L’Elisir d’Amore opened in 1832 in Milan. This opera is quirky and charming with a cast you will want to see.
La Bohθme October 4, 10 and 12, 2008
Puccini’s most popular opera, the original masterpiece that inspired the musical RENT, returns to Tulsa! We invite you to relive the timeless story of the six young bohemians as they dream, laugh, fall in love and mourn in the garrets and cafes of beckoning—and punishing—19th century Paris. Tenor Yegishe Manucharyan, Lenski in our 2005 production of Eugene Onegin, returns as Rodolfo; soprano Sara Jakubiak makes her company debut as Mimμ; Donita Volkwijn, Tulsa Opera’s splendid Bess in our recent Porgy and Bess, returns as Musetta; and Metropolitan Opera baritone Hyung Yun debuts as Marcello.
Hansel and Gretel February 21 and 27, March 1, 2009
The classic fairytale of the Brothers Grimm is combined with a lush Wagner-inspired romantic score in this evocative operatic masterpiece. From Maurice Sendak, creator of WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE, comes a phantasmagoric production that you and your family will remember for years to come. Sung in English and featuring a debut cast headed by Blythe Gaissert and Maureen McKay in the title roles, this is a dream evening in the theater that no one will want to miss!
L’Elisir d’Amore April 25, May 1 and 3, 2009
Shy Nemorino has no chance with popular Adina. Especially since dashing officer Belcore arrived in town! Things change however when Doctor Dulcamara, with his magic potions, brings the village under his spell. In the end they all raise a toast to love, friendship and laughter, in Gaetano Donizetti’s effervescent comedy, bathed in the Mediterranean sun. And everyone is bound to recognize the sweet and melancholy melody of Nemorino’s aria, made famous by Luciano Pavarotti. Metropolitan Opera soprano Mari Moriya and exciting young tenor Victor Ryan Robertson make their Tulsa Opera debuts; Terry Hodges returns as Dulcamara.
Make plans to day to see each of these operas. We are currently taking subscription orders. Call the Tulsa Opera ticket office today at 918-587-4811 or toll free at 866-298-2530.
