The struggles continued for the Tulsa Oilers Saturday
night as the Indianapolis Ice notched their second straight victory over Tulsa and sixth win in a row, downing the Oilers 6-1 in front of 3,363 elated fans at the Pepsi Coliseum.
Ice goaltender Shawn
Silver, currently the Central Hockey League's hottest goaltender, set a new CHL record for shut out minutes - previously set last season by Oiler netminder Rod Branch. Silver went 222:03 without allowing a
goal, breaking Branch's previous record of 192:17.
The loss to Indianapolis extended Tulsa's losing streak to 3 games as the Oilers' record fell to 18-5-0.
With Tulsa's Dallas Anderson in the
penalty box for roughing late in the first period, the Ice grabbed a 1-0 lead at 18:51 when forward Justin Kearns received a pass in right circle and fired a shot that beat Branch stickside. Defensemen Ryan
Aikia and Bernie John assisted on Kearns' third goal of the season.
Indianapolis increased their lead to 2-0 when Ryan Carter exited the penalty box, intercepted an Oiler clearing attempt, and fed a
pass to Bryce Classen, who one-timed it from the slot into the back of the net for his 4th goal of the season at 2:01 of the second period.
The Ice went up 3-0 at 6:00 of the second when forward Randy
Holmes launched a wrister from the edge of the left wing circle that sailed over Branch's shoulder. The goal was set up by a feed from Kearns, with a second assist going to left winger Jared Dumba.
Indianapolis continued the onslaught at 1:29 of the third period when Greg Olsen skated down the left hand side, circled behind the Oiler net, and put a wraparound through Branch's fivehole for an unassisted
goal that gave the Ice a 4-0 lead. Branch was pulled and replaced by Oiler goalie Jason Stone immediately following Olsen's goal.
Despite the Oilers' change in net, the Ice continued to score at will,
as defenseman Scott Lewis fired a shot from the left point over Stone's shoulder at 2:23 of the third.
Just over three minutes later, Indy took a 6-0 lead when John fed a pass to right winger Etienne
Morin, who put a shot from the right wing past Stone stickside at 5:49 of the third.
Tulsa spoiled Silver's bid for a third straight shut out when forward Klage Kaebel scored on a shot from the right
wing side that sneaked just inside the far post. Assists went to defensemen Kevin Livingston and Jorin Welsh.
Tulsa returns home for a five game homestand starting this Friday at the Tulsa Convention
Center when the Oilers take on the Ft. Worth Brahmas. Game time is set for 7:35 p.m. |
