Saints Drill Oilers 7-1
Tulsa Falls To Second Place in Northwest Division February 1, 2003 by Janna Kinder TulsaHockey.net
The Tulsa Oilers suffered a drubbing at the hands of the San Angelo Saints on Friday night at San Angelo Coliseum, falling 7-1 in front of an announced crowd of 3,107.
With the Oilers losing and
the Oklahoma City Blazers defeating the Memphis RiverKings 5-3 on Friday night, Tulsa fell to second place in the Northwest Division, with the Blazers still holding two games in hand on Tulsa.
San
Angelo took a 1-0 lead at 7:04 of the first period during a 4 on 4 situation when center Chris Peach faked out an Oiler player and put a shot past Tulsa goaltender Rod Branch, with assists going to Steve
Roberts and defenseman Konrad Brand.
The Saints increased their lead to 2 at 17:21 of the first on a 2 on 1 rush, with Jeff Cheeseman feeding a cross ice pass to Roberts who one-timed a shot off the
inside of the post and into the goal. Roberts' goal was his 4th in 6 games.
San Angelo went up 3-0 when Cheeseman maneuvered around an Oiler defender and backhanded a shot from the left circle into
the twine for his 3rd goal of the season, assisted by defenseman Ryan Reid at 4:57 of the second period.
Peach got his second goal of the evening and 19th goal of the season at 6:23 of the second,
receiving a feed from Cory Pecush in front of the Oiler net and putting the puck into the cage, untouched and unchallenged by the Oiler skaters.
The Saints' barrage continued when Roberts was credited
with a fluky goal at 15:10 of second, as Branch batted the puck off his stick, with the puck bouncing downward and rolling across the line, giving San Angelo a 5-0 lead.
Tulsa's Jamie Steer put the
Oilers on the board with a power play goal at 8:24 of the third period, assisted by forwards Pat Hallett and Todd Marcellus.
Despite the Oilers spoiling the shut out bid for Saints netminder Bryce
Wandler, San Angelo would score twice more in the third period - defenseman Brad Cook at 9:50 for a shorthanded goal and Kori Davison getting a power play tally at 17:04 to close out the scoring.
The
Oilers travel to Wichita to face the Thunder in a 7:30 match at the Kansas Coliseum. |
