Rayz Sting Oilers 3-1
Tulsa's Losing Streak Reaches Three Games
February 21, 2003
by Janna Kinder  TulsaHockey.net

The Tulsa Oilers lost their third straight game at the hands of the Corpus Christi Rayz Friday night, falling 3-1 at the Memorial Coliseum in Corpus Christi.

With the loss, the Oilers record fell to 30-18-5. Though the Oilers still maintain first place in the Northwest Division, that position is now in danger as the Oklahoma City Blazers, who were well on their way to a victory over the San Angelo Saints Friday night at the time of this report, will likely pull even with the Oilers in points (65), still holding two games in hand on Tulsa.

Tulsa goaltender Matt Carmichael stopped 34 of 37 shots, losing his first game as an Oiler.

Corpus Christi broke a scoreless tie at 18:09 of the first period when Russell Hogue put a backhander from the slot past Carmichael for his 5th goal of year, assisted by Ryan Prentice and defenseman Jason Carriere.

The Oilers tied the score at 1 when forwards Todd Marcellus and Justin Ossachuk raced up ice on a 2 on 1 rush. With Marcellus sending a pass across the crease area to Ossachuk, the puck bounced off Rayz netminder Brent Belecki's glove and onto the stick of Ossachuk, who in turn poked a shot into the net for his 18th goal of the season. Forward Peter MacKellar received the secondary assist on the goal, which was scored at 13:00 of the second period.

Corpus Christi scored what would be the game-winner when Prentice put in a rebound off a shot by Hogue during a Rayz power play at 19:24 of second.

Rayz' winger John Sicinski added an empty netter at 19:44 of the third, salting the Oilers' wounds.

The Oilers return to action Saturday night as they travel to Austin to take on the IceBats. The puck drops at 7:30 p.m.
