Thunder Staves Off Oilers In 2-1 Victory

Backed by solid goaltending and a smothering
defensive effort, the Wichita Thunder defeated the Tulsa Oilers 2-1 Friday night at the Tulsa Convention Center.Wichita netminder Kristian Antila was impenetrable for most of the contest,
stopping 35 of 36 shots.
CHL Standings as of February 28, 2003 With Tulsa's Dallas Anderson in the penalty box for roughing, the Thunder grabbed a
1-0 lead at 5:44 of the first period when Jerry Cunningham put a rebound from the mid slot past a fallen Rod Branch. Aaron Plumb and Tim Stay were awarded assists on the opening goal.No scoring occurred
in the second period, though Tulsa had some golden opportunities to tie the game, including a hit post. The Thunder increased their lead to 2 at 5:47 of the third period when Tom Gomes broke
through the Oiler zone and backhanded a high shot past Branch, assisted by Jason Duda and Travis Clayton. Tulsa got on the board during a four minute power play when Todd Marcellus wristed a
quick, low shot from the left circle through Antila's pads at 14:07 of the third for his 36th goal of the season, assisted by Pat Hallett.
Despite tremendous effort, the Oilers were unable to get the equalizer. Tulsa travels to Lubbock for a Saturday night contest with the Cottton Kings. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m. |
