The Tulsa Oilers scored three times in the third period, rallying for a 4-2 victory against the Wichita Thunder Saturday night at the Kansas Coliseum.
Tulsa goaltender Rod Branch stopped 17 of 19
shots, posting his 22nd win of the season.
The Oilers' win boosted their record to 26-15-5 and improved their season series against the Thunder to 7-3.
Wichita's Tom Gomes opened the scoring at
6:52 of the first period, receiving a pass from Jean-Francois Picard on the left point and re-directing the puck into the net for his 15th goal of the season. Travis Clayton also received an assist on the
goal.
At 15:55 of the first period, Oiler forward Klage Kaebel put a shot from the left wing past Thunder netminder Grant Sjerven, scoring his 8th goal of the season during a Wichita power play to tie
the game at 1.
The Thunder regained the lead on a power play at 16:14 of the second period when Jason Duda retrieved a rebound from a shot by Gomes, poking the puck into the net for his 19th goal of
the season.
Tulsa's third period breakout began when Aaron Millar played the puck off the near boards, feeding a pass to Todd Marcellus, who broke in alone on Sjerven, went to his right and put a
backhander into the twine at 5:49 of the third, tying the score at 2. Pat Hallett received the secondary assist on Marcellus' 23rd goal of the season.
During a delayed penalty against Wichita, Tulsa's
Derek Toninato blasted a shot from the right wing into the back of the net at 7:49 of the third. Helpers were awarded to Kaebel and defenseman Jared Reigstad.
With Sjerven pulled for an extra
attacker, the Oilers sealed the victory at 19:02 of the third when Toninato beat out an icing call and fed the puck back to Marcellus, who put a shot into the empty Wichita net. |
