Oilers Down Buzzards 4-1
Tulsa Conpletes Three Game Sweeps, Wins Fourth Straight February 9, 2003 by Janna Kinder TulsaHockey.net
The Tulsa Oilers completed a three game sweep on Sunday at the Tulsa Convention Center, defeating the El Paso Buzzards 4-1 in front of 4,444 spirited fans.
Tulsa netminder Matt Carmichael posted his
third victory as an Oiler, stopping 18 of 19 Buzzard shots. Carmichael has not lost a game in an Oiler sweater thus far.
Posting their fourth straight win, the Oilers record improved to 29-15-5 and a
Northwest Division leading 63 points.
Following a scoreless first period, the Oilers got on the board at 1:17 of the second period when Peter MacKellar fed a pass from the right wing to Klage Kaebel
in front of the Buzzard net, with the Tulsa centerman one timing a shot past El Paso goaltender James Ronayne for his 9th goal of season.
Eleven seconds after the Oilers scored, a lengthy fisticuffs
occured between Tulsa's Dallas Anderson and El Paso's Josh Tymchak, setting a more intense tone to the game.
Tulsa grabbed a 2-0 lead on a beautiful succession of cross ice passes between Todd
Marcellus, Derek Toninato, and MacKellar, with MacKellar receiving the puck in the right crease area and banging it home at 6:19 of the second for his 3rd goal in as many games.
The Oilers went up 3-0
when rookie forward Lyle Steenbergen raced down the right wing and skated from right to left through the El Paso slot. With Ronayne drawn out of position, Steenbergen fed a pass to Pat Hallett in the right
circle, who one timed a high shot into the empty net at 7:09 of the second. Aaron Millar received the secondary assist on Hallett's 17th goal of the season.
El Paso spoiled Carmichael's shutout bid,
which would have been his first of the season, at 11:53 of the third period when defenseman Jeff Potter converted a power play goal, assisted by forwards Derrell Upton and Troy Linna.
Oiler defenseman
Jorin Welsh capped the scoring with an empty net goal fired from near the Oiler blue line at 19:17 of the third, unassisted.
Tulsa returns to action this Thursday for an important game against the
Indianapolis Ice. The puck drops at 7:05 p.m. at the Tulsa Convention Center. |
