Bugs Bump Oilers 5-4 in Shootout
Tulsa Lets Another One Get Away in Loss To Bossier-Shreveport
January 17, 2003
by Janna Kinder  TulsaHockey.net

For the second time in as many games, a 3-0 lead wasn't big enough to secure a win for the Tulsa Oilers, as they were defeated 5-4 in a shootout by the Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs in front of 4,110 fans at the CenturyTel Center Friday night.

By 12:08 of the second period, Tulsa had built a three goal lead on two tallies by veteran forward Chris Johnston as well as a power play goal by defenseman Jorin Welsh.

But once again, defensive breakdowns cost the Oilers dearly, as Bossier tied the game at 3 in the second period on goals by Craig Minard, Dan Wildfong and Jim Sprott.

The Oilers re-gained the lead when forward Aaron Millar scored an unassisted goal at 18:52 of the second period.

However, Wildfong scored his second goal of the evening at 5:21 of the third period, knotting the score at 4.

Following a scoreless overtime frame, Bossier took the game from the Oilers when Chad Spurr and Minard beat Oiler netminder Rod Branch in the shootout. Johnston, Pat Hallett, Todd Marcellus, and Millar were all denied in their attempts by Mudbug goaltender Ken Carroll.

The Oklahoma City Blazers, who were victorious in a 4-1 decision over the New Mexico Scorpions Friday night, lead the Oilers by 1 point in the Northwest Division with 52 points and hold a game in hand.

One good bit of news for the Oilers was the 3-2 loss suffered by the Amarillo Gorillas at the hands of the Fort Worth Brahmas on Friday night. Amarillo trails Tulsa by 7 points with 5 games in hand.

The Oilers close out their road trip on Saturday night when they travel to Fort Worth to face the Brahmas for a 7:05 p.m. match.
