Mudbugs Bust Oilers 5-3
Oilers Losing Skid Reaches Four at Hands of Bossier-Shreveport January 2, 2003 by Janna Kinder TulsaHockey.net
The Tulsa Oilers' skid continued Thursday night at the Tulsa Convention Center, as the Bossier Shreveport Mudbugs capitalized on defensive breakdowns, skating away with a 5-3 victory.
The Oilers
grabbed a 1-0 lead at 12:03 of the first period during a 4 on 4 situation when defenseman Mike Mohr sent a nifty cross ice feed from the left circle to forward Todd Marcellus, who banged the puck into a
gaping net from the right crease area past Carroll for his 21st goal of the season.
With heavy traffic in the Oiler crease, Bossier tied the game at 1 at 18:00 of the first on a blast from the high
slot by left winger Chris Brassard, beating a screened Oiler goaltender Rod Branch. An assist was also given to Dan Wildfong.
Tulsa re-took the lead at 19:21 of the first when center Klage Kaebel
sent a pass from behind the Mudbug net to Derek Toninato, who sent a perfectly placed shot into the top left corner of the net for his 2nd goal of the season, with the secondary assist going to rookie
forward Lyle Steenbergen.
The Bugs tied the game at 2 at 12:48 of the second period during a flurry of action in front of the Oiler net in which Tulsa was unable to clear the puck out, as Forbes
MacPherson put the puck past a fallen Branch into the low left side of the net, assisted by Dru Burgess and Wildfong.
Bossier took a 3-2 lead when defenseman Jim Sprott blasted a slap shot from the
top of the left wing at 14:20 of the second, beating Branch gloveside for an unassisted goal.
The Oilers knotted the score at 3 when Chris Johnston put a rebound in from close range at 19:21 of the
second, assisted by forwards Pat Hallett and Aaron Millar. Johnston's 5th goal of the season brought and end to the veteran forward's 14 game scoring drought.
The Bugs took a 4-3 lead when Jeff Glowa
collected his own rebound in the slot, scoring over a laid out Branch at 6:12 of the third period.
Bossier capped the scoring with an empty netter at 19:52 of the third, scored by David Oliver and
assisted by Tony Bergin.
The Oilers return to action tomorrow night against the Oklahoma City Blazers. The puck drops at 7:35 p.m. |
