Gorillas Down Oilers 5-4 in Shootout
Amarillo Hands Tulsa Sixth Straight Loss
January 4, 2003
by Janna Kinder  TulsaHockey.net

The Tulsa Oilers fell 5-4 in a shootout to the Amarillo Gorillas Saturday night at the Amarillo Civic Center.

With the loss, Tulsa's winless streak extended to six games. In addition, the Oklahoma City Blazers pulled to within 3 points of the Oilers for the lead in the Northwest Division by defeating the Wichita Thunder 3-0 on Saturday.

Amarillo amassed a remarkable 63 shots against the Oilers, compared to 37 for Tulsa.

A positive note for the Oilers was the improved play of forward Dallas Anderson, who registered one goal and two assists in his first action since serving a four game suspension imposed by the league on December 31.

The Oilers grabbed a 1-0 lead at 6:13 of the first period when Anderson fed Justin Ossachuk a pass which he banged past Gorilla netminder Steve DeBus during a Tulsa power play.

Amarillo knotted the score at 1 on a power play goal by Dorian Anneck at 19:41 of the first.

Teams traded goals in the second frame, with Gorilla centerman Derek Hahn scoring at 9:38 and Ossachuk answering at 14:54, assisted by Chris Johnston and Anderson.

Each team scored twice in the third period - Anderson on a power play at 4:42, Amarillo's Ben Maidment at 5:52, Oiler veteran forward Todd Marcellus at 11:32 (shorthanded), and Anneck with a late game-tying goal at 17:04.

Following a scoreless overtime, the teams went to a shootout, in which Amarillo prevailed by scoring two goals compared to Tulsa's one, with Gorilla defenseman Brandon Carper receiving credit for the game winner. The only Oiler to score in the shootout session was Pat Hallett.

Tulsa resumes action on Friday when they travel to Oklahoma City to take on the Blazers. Game time is set for 7:35 p.m.
