Oilers Crash Thunder 2-1 in Overtime
Rookie Netminder Stone Picks Up Win in Home Debut November 30, 2002 by Janna Kinder TulsaHockey.net
For the second time in less than a week, the Tulsa Oilers and Wichita Thunder went to an overtime session to decide a contest. And for the second time in less than a week, the Oilers scored quickly in the
extra session to seal a win and another two points in the CHL standings.
The game featured strong goaltending on both ends of the ice, as Tulsa's Jason Stone and Wichita's Kristian Antila, named the
game's number one and two stars respectively, proved themselves tough to beat in the low scoring battle between divisional rivals.
Though the Oilers looked to be off their game for a good portion of
the match, they did as they have done all year and found a way to win, sending their record to 18-2-0.
The victory was Stone's second as an Oiler and first in front of his hometown fans, improving his
overall record to 2-2-0.
The Thunder opened the scoring at 4:57 of the second period when Peter MacKellar knocked in a rebound from directly in front of Stone. The goal was scored with one second left
on a Wichita power play and was assisted by Todd Johnson and Chad Nelson.
With time winding down on Tulsa, forward Justin Ossachuk tied the game at 1, firing a wrister from deep in the right circle
into the left side of the net, beating Antila stickside at 13:30 of the third period. Ossachuk's 6th goal of the season was assisted by forward Klage Kaebel and rookie defenseman Jordon Flodell.
The
Oilers had a 4 on 3 advantage heading into the overtime session, as defenseman Pat Stachniak was whistled for tripping at 19:53 of the third period - a call vehemently disputed by the Thunder.
Thirty
four seconds into overtime, forward Todd Marcellus scored his seventeen goal of the season, firing a slap shot from the top point into the back of the net to give the Oilers the win. Left winger Chris
Johnston was awarded an assist on the game-winning goal.
The Oilers return to action Tuesday night, taking on the Memphis RiverKings in a 7:35 p.m. match at the Tulsa Convention Center. |
